Nutrition Update.

Last Thursday, January 20th, I met with a Nutritionist to discuss Ryan’s needs and how to meet them.  The first thing we agreed on was to provided him a more nutrient dense canned tube feed. He will be using a product called Impact 1.5. It specifically targets brain health.

We also discusses his vitamin and mineral requirements. We added even more Vitamin A, Vitamin B-12, and Vitamin E to his diet. He is already getting a hefty dose of Vitamin C and Vitamin D, so we stayed the course on  these. As you might recall, we have slowly and methodically added different foods to his diet. At this point, we know he is able to tolerate:

  • Plain Yogurt
  • Skim Milk
  • Hard Boiled Egg
  • Raw Kale
  • Boiled Sweet Potato
  • Raw Carrots
  • Garlic
  • Blueberries
  • Apples
  • Orange Juice
  • Carrot Juice
  • Pomegranate Juice
  • Prune Juice
  • Mustard Seed
  • Parsley
  • Tomato
  • Cranberry Juice

We are using a class of foods called “super foods”. These provide the most nutrient dense impact per calorie.  I’d like to try almonds and chick peas next.

Presently, we give Ryan 150 ml (roughly 2/3 Cup) of different combinations blended per day. We began at 125 ml (1/2 Cup), and plan to slowly increase volume.

Ken, this is fantastic, it is going to do wonders for boosting Ryan’s immune system and overall health, let us know of whatever changes you may see. Consulting with a nutritionist was an excellent move, Ryan is really going to benefit from this. You amaze me with your diligence — I hope someday, you might consider writing a handbook for people who are caring for loved ones with TBI’s — for that matter, the nurses, therapists, doctors, etc. should get copies of it too. It would be wonderful to have all this information compiled into one source, and it would be a tremendous help to so many. God bless you, Ken, praying for continued healing for Ryan and for strength and peace for you and your family. Love you guys, Paula

Writing books should be no problem for Ken. They are mostly written already. You do have all your notes, right, Ken.
