Nutrition Update: Super Foods!

I thought it might be about time to provide another update on Ryan’s Nutrition.

In a previous post, I mentioned we are switching Ryan over to a new canned formula called Impact 1.5. This is going well. At present, 50% of his canned formula is this Impact 1.5. My approach is to incrementally add 25% a week. I expect to take him up to 75% today.

The blenderized (i.e., is that even a word?) food is proceeding better than I could have imagined.  This now comprises 20% – 25% of his total diet. Here is a list of nutrient dense foods Ryan tolerates:

  • Plain Yogurt
  • Skim Milk
  • Hard Boiled Egg
  • Raw Kale
  • Boiled Sweet Potato
  • Raw Carrot
  • Garlic
  • Blueberry
  • Apple
  • Orange Juice
  • Carrot Juice
  • Pomegranate Juice
  • Prune Juice
  • Mustard Seed
  • Fresh Parsley
  • Tomato
  • Cranberry Juice

Newly Added:

  • Wild Atlantic/Alaskan Salmon (Baked)
  • Soy Bean
  • Onion
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Broccoli
  • Quinoa
  • Cocoa
  • Acai Berries/Juice

As Sue said, I am becoming a (mad) scientist experimenting with the best mixes. I’m not sure how I’d mange without Excel! Pivot tables and conditional formatting might be the best inventions of the last century. Next to TiVo, that is.

I only make enough puree for two days. Three days, tops. For example, this morning I made 500 ml of the following: kale, acai, garlic, parsley, onion, carrot, skim milk, soy beans, salmon, and egg. This is exactly two days worth of food (excluding canned formula).

In a new twist, I added vitamins A, B12, E, a probiotic, and calcium to the mix. In the past we gave these independently. It makes more sense that these will be better delivered to the body with high-quality food.

The tricky part, which we are getting better, is keeping his weight at (or around) goal. For Ryan, it is 175 lbs. We have done a superb job managing this, I might say. We are fortunate to have a bed that weighs him.

On another topic, Ryan has a dental check-up today (house call). I’ll put out another post today letting everyone know how it went. Promise!

  2. Michele says:

    Dear Mr. Diviney,

I think you are the best DAD/FATHER IN THE WORLD! Keep the Faith and always remember that every second of every day God is watching and caring for all of your family!

The person that is posting the thumbs down must be a evil, evil person.
How could anyone do this. This is just WRONG!!!!!

    • Sam Durham says:

Bonnie, the thumbs down person is at least reading it so they can go to sleep at night knowing someone they know was involved with causing all this pain. Hope it gives them MUCH to think about as they lay on their pillow at night. You and I can go to sleep knowing our friends/family wouldn’t hurt someone like this and saying our prayers for Ryan. Hope they thumbs down my post too so I know I made them think.

    • Jo Hobbs says:

Haven’t posted on yesterday’s yet, but just have to comment, I love your word “blenderized,” and I’m trying to think of others. LOL You are a gem, Ken! Hope you are consuming these very healthful foods as well. If so, I don’t have to worry about your nutrition. Still here.

  4. Ken, you are great! I give you the honorary BS degree for your humor, I ‘m sure you can appreciate that. I also give you the honorary MS degree for your “Mad Scientist” concoctions. What do you have in mind for your Doctorate? I am with Michelle on this one, you are the best Dad/Father in the world, next to my own of course. I hope Ryan gets a good report from the dentist, and I hope you all are having a wonderful day. Still here, still praying.

  5. Paula Yocom says:

Hi Ken, this is GREAT!!!!! I’m not a vitamin expert, but what about D? I am so excited about this diet you have Ryan on — it is doing great things for him!! Way to go, Ken, I think you’ve cracked another code in Ryan’s ongoing recovery. And yes, I’m still praying on your behalf, and for Ryan, Sue and Kari too : ) Love you guys!! Paula

  6. Paula Yocom says:

Awesome, Ken — this is wonderful, no wonder Ryan looks so healthy!!! : )

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-490646/Sleeping-pill-helped-girl-wake-SIX-year-coma.html

a strange side effect of this sleeping pill was that it was making coma patients begin to wake up after five to six years in a vegetative state.

    • Sam Durham says:

This is fascinating. Now Ken can research the trial! Well done nic!!!!

    • Jo Hobbs says:

Unbelievable! I am sure IBRF or Kessler can fill us in on this research. Sounds amazing. You know what they say, discoveries are made every day in places no one ever thought to look! Hmmm — wonder what is in that pill! I’ll have to check it out.

      • Jo Hobbs says:

Memory refreshed now — this is Ambien, the sleeping pill that Patrick Kennedy had taken the night before his infamous car crash. This not to say that it couldn’t be used to bring a comatose person to consciousness. Wouldn’t that be an answer to our prayers!

    • Nic, We have tried this — on & off — for about a year now. Unfortunately, it has had no effect.
      😦

      • nic says:

        that is unfortunate 😥
well, still praying for Ryan’s recovery, and checking in on rallyforryan.com every day!

  8. Rita says:

Pureed is a real word… but I think we should call your nutritional concoctions Mad Meal Mash-ups.

  9. Will says:

That is a great and very healthy list of items. With just a few more I could make a great vegetable curry! Or a modest Veggie Stew! My prayers continue.

  10. Gail Doyle says:

Dear Ken. Sounds very nutritious, and so good for Ryan to be getting …Keep up the good work and praying for you all..:) Gail

  11. Stacy says:

Have you ever considered juicing? You can juice just about anything, but kale, carrots, apples and oranges are particularly delish!

I heard your story on the Today Show and have been following your blog ever since. Thank you for sharing your story. You totally ‘got this’!
