In just one month, to the day, this site had another 100,000 views! I’m in awe. I really am. So, today, readership has reached 200,000.

Thank you, everyone, for coming back time-after-time. I’m so happy you see enough value here to make it part of your life. You continue to keep Ryan relevant. How can I ever thank you?I am having a great time sharing my family’s life with you, even during the tough periods. In fact, posting and the ensuing comments are like a warm blanket. I take comfort in knowing our family is not alone. Each day, I look forward to reading the comments. I’m not sure if I said this before, but I read every one. Many were used (or at least investigated) to improve our situation. And, how I love hearing from people for the first time! For fun I calculated commenting frequency and was interested to see that less than 1% (only 0.63%) post a comment per view!

I know, I have slightly (or perhaps, greatly) offended a few people every now and then. Really, I’m actually more offensive in person… so I’ve been reminded. More so than it shows on this blog, so this is an exercise in self-control. Well, at least that’s what Sue says.

In all sincerity, I never mean to upset anyone. Anyone, that is, except Austin Vantrease and Jon May supporters. I don’t consider how they feel for even a second. I have no reservations about putting an occasional dig or two toward them or their families. After all, they kind of deserve it.

These families do spend a lot of time keeping up on here. I have the capability, like all blogs (I’m guessing) to gather information on demographics. Not surprisingly, Newark, DE is quite interested in what I have to say. As are the surrounding areas where these families work. If so inclined, like when a particularly mean comment is posted, I confirm the location through a Google longitude and latitude application. I’m never surprised.

I’ve actually considered calling them out, by name. Then I realize these are people who lurk in shadows (usually behind dumpsters, I suppose). They inflict their sinister damage and retreat to the darkness, cowering and finger-pointing.

Now, I know many might be considering telling me to get them out of my mind. Right? Well, this is impossible. Just think about it for a minute. Will you ever forget the teacher who treated your child poorly? Will you ever forget the town bully? Will you ever forget the coach who unfairly treated your son or daughter? Or, if you have no children, apply these same questions to yourself. Although, it’s entirely different messing with someone’s child. We are better equipped to handle those who treat us poorly, but anyone who treats our children this way is just asking for it.

Hey, if it works for someone to forget then they are truly amazing. I would suggest it’s biologically impossible to forget tragedy (and those people and circumstances surrounding it). Unless, it’s your brain’s involuntary way of coping. For me, well, it’s not in my make-up. I’m not talking about forgiveness here. I’m talking about forgetfulness. Forgiveness is another topic that I will not begin to blab about. I hope that all just made some sense, at least. Perhaps I’m narrow minded…

Wait. Where was I? Oh, yeah… 200,000!

I’m so flattered that people connect with me on this blog. “Real and raw” is how many have described it. To tell the truth, I love that description. To me, it tells me I’m being open and honest. Not flowery. Not phony. I took the risk of putting our situation out there, through my eyes, and people connected. Real and raw… wow!

Im glad that that so many people are following this. I am not a friend of ryans we have never met but i am a student at west virginia university and when i heard about this tragedy i immediately started following it. I read your blog almost every day and enjoy being able to follow him in his recovery. I am always praying for the best and cannot wait until i see the post telling us all that he is up and talking again.

  2. Jo Hobbs says:

I love you for who you are, Ken, Sue and Kari, not some impossible dream of who I should want you to be. I love your honesty, your love of family, your willingness to give up your career to care for Ryan… …I could go on, but then it might sound as if I’m trying to fluff your feathers. LOL I can’t think of any family whom I admire more than yours. “I’m the dad!” I will never forget your words! Yes, you’re the dad, you can take the best care of Ryan and do everything with his well-being foremost in your mind. And hey, we’re Team Diviney — behind you all the way!
Always here, with hope, faith, love and truly believing in the power of prayer, knowing that God will bring us through whatever life throws at us. Peace and love to all.

  3. Ms. Blasé says:

I think a CONGRATULATIONS is looooong overdue! You’ve put a LOT of effort into your this blog and obviously, according to the numbers, I’m not the only one who appreciates it. Your transparency, your humor and your resilient spirit are infectious. Keep up the excellent work, Ken 🙂

  4. HARTNESS FAMILY says:

STILL HERE DIVINEY FAMILY. AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE …I WILL BE UNTILL YOU STOP POSTING. I HAVE IT A PART OF MY DAILY ROUTINE TO CHECK THIS SITE EVERY MORNING AND EVENING. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR FAMILY WITH ALL OF US WHO ARE RALLYING FOR RYAN!!

  5. Tom McLhinney says:

Ken, I love reading your daily posts. I feel it is very important that everyone knows exactly what the Diviney family goes through on a daily basis. Keep up the great work. Brian said Ryan looked great over the weekend and was glad to see everyone. Your family is ALWAYS in our thoughts and prayers.

  6. Colleen Brunelle says:

I can’t say it enough, you’ve all become part of many lives and many family’s. Like many have said, it’s part of a routine now to check on Ryan. I’ve never met him, but I feel like I know him through you and this blog. You, Sue and Kari are an inspiration to us all with the devotion and dedication to Ryan. If we all loved our children as much and you do, if we all brought them up to be decent and caring human beings, if we all took responsibility for whatever our children may have done wrong and if we all stood together as parents, animals like Vantrease and May wouldn’t be walking around. Truly the ignorance of their families and supporters is something none of us can even fathom. I don’t blame you one bit for your bitterness. I’m sure the majority of the 200,000 viewers feel the same way. Again, thank you for sharing Ryan with us and keep us posted. It’s the first thing I read in the morning and the last thing at night. I rest my head in prayer for Ryan and your family every night. I’m hoping everyday for good news~~

    • Gail Doyle says:

Colleen. I feel exactly the way you do I always check on Ryan morning and night and so look forward to reading Kens words and pray for his healing

  7. Ken,

I don’t think I’ve ever left a comment on your blog….only the Facebook page. I don’t know you or your family but there are only a few degrees of seperation between us. I’m friends thru the MOMS Club with Dr. Rodriguez’s wife. I’m also a friend of Debbi Kotin’s. We live in Ashburn. Our son attended preschool at Broad Run High School thru the student program there, 4 and 5 years ago, surely that was the same time Ryan was a student there. Ashburn is a small place. But thru your story, I’ve seen that the people here have big hearts.

When I became aware of Ryan and his story many months ago, I began following your updates on Facebook, on your blog and we saw the Today Show as well. Its been incredible and inspiring to read your posts…I’ve laughed and I’ve cried. And I’ve often wondered how you do what you do, and then having two boys myself, realize I would do the same thing for them (or at least try).

In short, I think you and Sue and Kari are simply amazing human beings. Amazing. And I know that Ryan feels your love, and feels you standing by his side every step of the way.

Keeping the faith, here on the other side of Ashburn!

    Michelle

  8. J.R. says:

Just letting you know that not everyone from Newark, DE is supporting Vantrease. I’m a University of Delaware alum(class of 2010), and I have to say that I’m embarrassed these thugs went to my school. I’m also a Phillies fan, and I’m also embarrassed that this thug is a fan and did what he did over something so stupid. I was bummed about the World Series loss, but all I did was whine about it to some friends at Happy Hour. It would have never crossed my mind to do what Vantrease and his “friends” did to your son.

Your blog is inspiring and life-affirming. I’m facing immense school loan debt and a crappy job market after I get out of grad school, but whenever that gets me down…I think about what you and your family have gone through, and it gives me the desire to keep my head up. The depth of love displayed by not just your family but the surrounding community is incredibly touching, and something we need in such a cynical world.

I never knew Ryan and have never been to WVU, but I have to say that my heart has permanently been touched by his story. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to write that to him personally.

  9. Gail Doyle says:

Dear Ken Thats wonderful (200,000) shows that so many people care about Ryan and all the care his family gives him. I also feel like I know you all from your blogs and care so much about Ryan and that he heals completely So many people praying for Ryan and you all .Thanks for making us part of your life with Ryan…Please get better Ryan. We all care so for you. God Bless. ~ Gail

  10. Rita says:

Keep keeping it real and we’ll keep reading and praying. It’s so great to see love for Ryan just grow and grow, in so many ways. Only good things can come from that. Just wait until we reach critical mass!

  11. Vicky Scott says:

The main point is that Ryan IS relevant! YES!

  12. Anna says:

Ken, Like many others I check on Ryan every morning and night. Hoping for some good news or at least a good laugh from you. I wish I could do more, I have been cleaning out for the yard sale and plan to help at the golf tournament. Ryan knows you and Sue are there for him at all times, I know it in my heart. He can feel and smell his Ashburn home. You are doing an incredible job and I hope to someday read your book, or watch your movie, whatever it may be titled.

  13. Tina says:

I live in a small town near Morgantown and I have followed Ryan’s story since it was on our local news and almost everyday since this blog was started. I have so much respect and admiration for you and your family. I as well continue to read this blog as long as you are posting. I never knew or met anyone in your family, but it’s easy to see that you have an incredible family.

  14. nic says:

Still here, from day one, all the way out from school in Utah! I went to high school with Ryan. I was a grade below him, and in all that time I don’t think I ever really spoke to him except for once. I think he was working behind the front desk at the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion. I knew him as that popular athletic kid from school, but he was so nice and very polite that I was so impressed! Still praying for you guys.

  15. Kathryn Beggs Howlett says:

I too keep a check on this blog as well as the facebook page. I am bound to this story as a mother, as a daughter, as a sister, as a wife, as a friend, as a teacher, as a person. In all capacities I try to imagine what it would be like to be walking in any of your shoes. And I cannot. My heart breaks for Ryan, for Ryan’s family. I read this blog as compared to the facebook page just months ago, and while I believe there is healing for Ryan, what I see most is a transformational healing for you Ken…..now I read this blog to see how Ryan is doing, but also how you are doing……how you are beginning to heal. I am grateful you found an outlet for all of your various voices Ken. The tired, heart-broken father, the proud and loving father, the adoring husband, the husband who may embarrass his wife, the student of medicine, the child who wants to hear our favorite jokes, the advocate, the philosopher …….all of your voices. I admire you for making your life so rawly public. For loving your son, daughter, wife, family, friends so deeply that you just put yourself right out there. And for allowing complete strangers to be brazen enough to say “I love you and your son and your family, and I will hold each one of you as near and dear to my heart as I do my own family.” Some day I’d like to shake your hand.

  16. Lynne Mandel says:

    Ken,

I don’t comment very often, but I read your posts every day, still praying that Ryan wakes. Your posts make me laugh and cry. I think everyone is thankful you can find some release and comfort through this blog. You, Ryan and your family have reached so many with your story. From one WB’er to another, I remain, SHSP in Pittsburgh, Lynne

  17. Nancy Tawney says:

I am proud to be one of 200,000! My day starts and ends with Ryan, you, Sue and Kari. I will continue to pray and wait for the day when you announce that Ryan is awake and well! Ken you and your family are amazing! Go Team Diviney!

  18. JS says:

Dear Divineys, I almost don’t feel like I should post a comment as I am in no way connected to your family. The only similarity that we share is my son is the same age. It truly does break my heart to see what those two individuals have done to your son. You are a very strong family and I hope maybe one day that Ryan will come back to you in some way as the son you had before this tragedy. I am a runner and everytime I feel tired or not wanting to give 100 percent on one of my runs I remind myself that I am so fortunate to be able to run. I will never take that for granted. I wish you all the best and thanks for letting me read your blog daily.

  19. Jill in Morgantown says:

    Ken,
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Ryan IS and ALWAYS WILL BE RELEVANT. I check on Ryan every morning and night and I’ve never met him or his wonderful family 🙂 I’m thinking a great way to celebrate the 200,000 hits is the good ole cigars and porn night!! :):) Still here and praying in Morgantown

  20. Trish says:

My day begins and ends with checking on Ryan and your family. Though we do not know each other, I have been drawn to your family for several reasons. First, because 2 of my 4 son’s went to WVU, and second because both of our families are enduring terrible tragedy. My son Jim took his life 4 days after coming home from WVU on May 10,2006. While my family and I are surviving very well, not a moment of our waking hours pass without thoughts of our precious son. Since reading about Ryan in the Washington Post I have spent many waking hours now also thinking and praying and hoping for Ryan.

Before learning of Ryan’s tragedy I would fantasize and wish that my son had survived, even if in a “total care” state. After following your story, I wonder if I could endure what you go through. I’m a nurse, and don’t know that I could provide such excellent and comprehensive care, and all the fears and emotional ups and downs. I admire and have been inspired by your family. Your resilience gives me strength. Your honesty even on the worst days keeps it real. Your courage and generosity to share your family in this public forum is a gift to the 200k followers of this blog.

So with heartfelt thanks to all of the Diviney Family. I will always be praying for your precious son.

    • Gail Doyle says:

So So sorry about your son. May he be at peace and may you find some peace too. It never goes away ever but we all go on GOd bless you and we’ll all keep praying for Ryan

  21. Diana Wiger says:

    Ken,
Like so many others said before me, John and I make it a point to read your blog everyday. Some make us laugh, some make us cry but they all make us pray for a day when Ryan can read them himself. Through the years, watching Ryan was always fun for us–he was an great athlete, he had an incredible sense of humor, he was smart and he was a loyal and dedicated friend to our daughter, Jessica. You and Sue are amazing parents and Ryan is made of the right stuff to get through all this!

    http://www.cff.org/aboutCFFoundation/NewsEvents/01-11-FDA-Announces-Recall-Triad-Alcohol-Products.cfm
Here is a recall of Triad Alcohol wipes and products. Throw them out if you have them. I just read this and I have a box that I use for blood meter testing.

Glad about the 200,000 posts. I think of that in terms of 200,000 prayer posts( and many more not posted) for Ryan. God bless you family.

  23. Andrew says:

I haven’t commented but am a daily reader of the blog and can’t wait for the day the webpage loads and the headline states, “Ryan wakes!” I never had the privilege of meeting Ryan but was immediately drawn to his story after reading about the horrific event. I think back to my years at WVU and recall many late nights at Dairy Mart purchasing a Stromboli or whatever looked appealing. Ryan and I have similar interests –a passion for WVU sports, Redskins fans, and we grew up near each other. I think all the time about how quickly life can change.

I just want the Diviney family to know – Ryan is in my daily prayers from Texas and I hope to celebrate a big WVU football win with Ryan in Morgantown sometime soon.

  24. Jennifer C. says:

Like many others, I’ve never met you or Ryan, but I do feel a connection as a WVU graduate. I check in every day to see how Ryan is doing – I pray for him and the rest of your family every day. Thank you for being so open and honest, and thank you for letting us into your lives to not only tell us about the hard times, but to celebrate the wins – always with love, strength, and grace.

  25. Nicole says:

Always here! Each and every day.

  26. The Colangelis says:

I appreciate reading the daily posts as well as the responses. This blog is one of the sites I routinely check-in each day and I look forward to progress reports on Ryan. I continue praying on his behalf and request God to bless both him and his family. Thanks!

  27. Paula says:

Ken, *congratulations*, that’s a lot of views in such a short period of time!! I was wondering — since this blog clearly resonates with so many people, and has developed quite a following…maybe a business or two (acceptable to you, of course) would pay to run an ad(s) on here. It could be another avenue to bring in much needed money to help cover Ryan’s medical costs. Just a thought my friend!

  28. sally ellis says:

Raw and real, keep on keepin on Ken, we can take it and we will always be here.

  29. Jen Lovelace says:

    Ken, Sue, Kari and Ryan,

I have just recently started commenting on this blog. I am a “regular” on the “Come together for Ryan Diviney” FB page. Your son feels like my child. I have smiled over him, praised God for him, been so proud of him and cried many tears over him. He has touched my heart on so many levels. Please know that I will be here through his recovery and beyond. Much love, Jen. PS Have you let him wrap up in his Team Diviney Blanket yet or is it still on his wall:)
